BMI (Body Mass Index) helps determine the correct body weight and/or the severity of the obesity. It is the ratio of the body weight in kilograms to the square of the height in square meters.

If your BMI is:

  • under 18.5 -> You are underweight
  • between 18.5 - 24.9 -> your body weight is normal
  • between 25 - 29.9 -> you are overweight
  • above 30 -> you are obese

Keep in mind that BMI does not measure your body fat directly. It is also equally applicable to men and women. As a result some people such as athletes may get an incorrect measurement of BMI, which might indicate that they are overweight, even though they do not have an excess of the body fat. Therefore BMI is not normally used in people with extensive muscle tissue, children under 18 years of age, women in pregnancy and after childbirth.

However, BMI is used as an indicator of potential health risks associated with being overweight or obese.
